Lesson Overview

Why can’t you optimize text alone? That is exactly the problem this lesson addresses. Google’s Images documentation explains that Google understands an image’s subject by combining alt text, computer vision, and the page content; at the same time, page metadata, the text near an image, titles, captions, and file names all influence how an image is understood and presented. In other words, images are not decoration—they are part of the semantics.

For video, Google likewise emphasizes that technical and descriptive signals—a crawlable video URL, thumbnails, playable ranges, and markers for expired or unavailable states—all affect discoverability (Source: Google).

Core Concepts

The 4 Values of Multimedia in GEO

  1. Supplementing semantics: images, tables, screenshots, and flowcharts can reinforce the understanding of abstract concepts.
  2. Strengthening evidence: product test images, experiment screenshots, and data charts can boost credibility.
  3. Improving explainability: complex processes are often easier to understand through flowcharts, comparison tables, and diagrams than through plain text.
  4. Boosting multimodal visibility: images and video serve not only the page but may also enter image search, video search, and multimodal answer scenarios (Source: Google).

Image Optimization Essentials

  • Place images near the relevant text.
  • Make alt text informative and contextually appropriate.
  • Give titles, captions, and file names real semantic meaning.
  • Match the page topic to the image topic.
  • Pair important images with structured data (Source: Google).

Video Optimization Essentials

  • Ensure the video URL, watch page, and thumbnail are crawlable.
  • Return a clear status for expired videos.
  • Make video availability and regional restrictions clear.
  • Provide explanatory text and context around the video (Source: Google).

In-Class Exercise

Build one “multimedia-enhanced content page” that includes at least:

  • 1 flowchart
  • 1 comparison table
  • 1 screenshot case
  • 1 video explanation
  • 1 set of optimized alt text / captions / file names

Learning Outcomes

  • An image semantic optimization checklist
  • A video publishing checklist
  • A multimedia-enhanced content template
